Our Association

The region around Dharwad district in Karnataka is endowed with rich natural resources. Nestled in the lap of the Malenadu (Western Ghats) region, is endowed with perfectly suitable agro-climate, air, rainfall, soil, water, and other resources for mango cultivation. Among all fruits, mango is called the “King of Fruits,” and in Dharwad district, mango cultivation is considered a natural blessing. Particularly, the Dharwad Apus (locally known as Alphanso or Badami) is regarded as a golden crop. Apart from Dharwad, this variety is cultivated in the surrounding districts of Haveri, Gadag, and Belagavi. Recently, under the “One District —One Product (ODOP)” scheme of Government of India, mango from Dharwad has been chosen as the district’s specialty product, which is a matter of pride.

In view of the implications of climate change and marketing challenges over the last few years, mango growers in the region developed greater concerns about fate of the crop. Therefore, they have come forward to organize themselves collectively, which is a welcome development. In this context, the Mavu Belegarar Balaga, (Mango Growers Group) Dharwad was initiated by mango farmers from Dharwad and surrounding areas. This group, though simple and non-formal in its beginning, has received guidance from many agricultural and horticultural experts, scientists, and thinkers. Over the last five years,

Emphasis has been placed on production through field visits, seminars, demonstrations, and workshops. Several programs have been organized in collaboration with University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalakote, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka Department of Horticulture, Mango Development and Marketing Board, Bengaluru, KAPPEC, private companies, input suppliers, experts, and other organizations. Currently, the Group is formally registered and has become a ray of hope for mango farmers.
